Term 2 Week 5: What We Are Learning This Week

Literacy: This week students are will continue to learn about the digraphs ar and or. They will be using these sounds to read/write words and construct sentences. During guided reading sessions this week I will continue to expose students to the reading strategy 'Say the first sound Mouse' to encourage them to hear the initial sound in words as they are reading. In writing lessons this week students will continue to learn about the structure of a report. As a whole class we will be innovating a report about a duck. Students will continue to write they own reports. Handwriting sessions this week will focus on the zig zig monster letters w, z, x & v.

Numeracy: The math focus for this week is measurement and geometry focusing on money (recognition, foreign currency and value). Students will learn about foreign currency (not all countries have the same money) and practise identifying the value of Australian money. During mental maths we will be revising skip counting (2's, 5's and 10's), telling the time and place value.

Science: We have now completed our dinosaurs unit based on the biological sciences learning strand. This week students begin a new Primary Connections science unit based on the chemical science learning strand. We will be looking at a "Mystery Object" and discussing how it has changed. This science unit will continue for the rest of the term.

History: This term we are discussing the differences and similarities between students daily lives and life during their parents and grandparents childhoods, including family traditions, leisure time and communications. This week students will discuss time lines as a class focussing on three time periods of the dinosaurs. We will be making a class timeline on string where students place dinosaurs in the correct period.
